International relations
Thanks to its privileged geographical location,
Barranquilla has consolidated itself as center for commercial
and industrial operations, standing out as the most important
development pole of the Colombian Caribbean Region. Since
the last years of the XIX Century, its vocation of cosmopolitan
city has turned it into the center of attention of national
and foreign investors, in commercial and industrial matters.
The city constitutes itself as an important location for multiple
international relations to take place, in which the knowledge
of strategies in negotiation, economy, judicial aspects, other
languages and cultures play a vital role.
The program's mission is to form professionals
that have an open vision of the World and can insert themselves
in it correctly, thus becoming citizens of the future, trained
people within a globalized world but with a Colombian cultural
identity.
The International Relations program wants
to contribute to the formation of the student so that he/she
has the capacity to:
- Use the tools required by the international community
for the strengthening of ties that will facilitate negotiation
and commercial political, economic, diplomatic and social
problem solving in the national and international context,
while still respecting multiculturalism.
- Prevent and solve conflicts of diverse nature in the
exercise of their profession, given their humanistic formation.
- Interact with diverse contexts easily, thanks to the
acquisition of communicational competences of at least
two foreign languages
- Contribute to the strengthening of our regional, national
and Latin-American identity as a key element for integration.
Professional Profile: The distinguishing characteristic
of the professional in INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS is the knowledge
of several disciplines, such as Political Science, International
Law, Economy, Languages, and Relations, accompanied by investigation.
This will allow him to establish commercial, cultural, diplomatic,
political and academic bonds in diverse contexts. Thus he
will be able to become negotiator and to contribute to the
solution of problems and conflicts at international level,
but mainly it will help to impel the insertion of Colombia
in the international scenes; fulfilling the profile that a
professional in International Relations must have if het wants
to help the development of the country in XXI century.
Fields of Action: To develop serious and
rigorous work in different regional, national and international
scopes through an active presence that will be able to be
applied in the diplomatic service, international organisms,
multinational companies, in the support to the small, medium
and great Colombian businesses and also, to facilitate foreign
investors to understand our reality and contribute in this
form in the fortification of development poles. The excellence
of the professional in International Relations of Universidad
del Norte will allow diverse labor alternatives in the public
sector as well as in the private one for the exercise of his
profession. Allowing him to act as negotiator, adviser, consultant
and as manager of new companies that generate work sources.

Social Communication and
Journalism
The program's objective is to form successful
social communicators and journalists with an emphasis in production
and media management. These communicators and journalists
are:
- Professionals: Endowed with fluid speech and
property when expressing orally and in writing, through
graphics and, utilizing audiovisual media: such as, institutional
videos, documentaries, commercials, dramatizations and
news. Journalistic professionals who have the capacity
of analyzing and synthesizing, with a vision of the present
and future realities of humankind and of the Colombian
society, and a person who is always open to new advances
in the communication field.
- Leaders: Correct and with a strong ethical sense.
Who are investigative in nature that possess the skills
to develop solid foundations aesthetically, humanitarianly
and culturally. Who serve as a mediator for the different
groups in Colombian society and through their activities
make it easier to study and solve the problems of this
country. Continuously promote technological, scientific
and human development of the Colombian, searching for
quality in the life of our society.
- Industrialists: We look to stimulate the enterprising
spirit of the students who enter the program, to create
their own companies in the field of media or so that they
contribute to consolidate the existing dominating media
companies, within their field of knowledge, a language
of market administration, costs and budgets that make
them highly competitive. The formation that our program
offers in the administrative field is the most complete
in the country and our graduate is prepared to be an industrialist
of communications and to enroll in postgraduate studies
in productive and novel fields like: economy, finances,
and communications management. They are also prepared
to actively participate in the growth and development
of companies within the country.
- Producers: When we look to form a producer we
are speaking of forming a professional with a completely
different vision to which traditionally has been distributed
in the faculties of social communication in Latin America.
With seven semesters of formation in radio and television
production, the graduate of our program leaves prepared
to generate communicative processes, through modern media
and to make its communicative and journalistic work with
technical in radio and television with creativity, sufficiency
and quality.
Fields of Action: The fusion in a unique profession
of asocial communicator and a journalist, the entrepreneur
and media producer, will allow him, in the future, to play
a roll in:
- Media companies: written press, radio and channels
or public and private television broadcasting.
- Organizational communication: public direction of communications
or development departments, relations, advertising and
marketing, handling of corporative image for companies
and associations or for political or enterprise personalities.
- In communication for the development: design, execution
and evaluation of programs, plans or projects of communication
for specific groups of the community, in the public sector
as well as in the private one.

Psychology
The professionals of psychology must be people
committed to the improvement of the quality of life in human
beings. They must develop a deep capacity of analysis that
allows them to understand and take care of the processes that
influence emotions, motivations, and styles of thought and
behaviors of people. The Psychologist works with and for human
beings in preventive, curative and promotional programs. They
are managers, advisers and facilitators in the processes of
human development and in very diverse battle areas.
The objectives of the program is to form professionals
suitable to produce and apply a knowledge that contributes
in a significant way to the understanding of the human being,
to form and develop their potentials and to exceed with the
capacity to lead collective processes that look for the well-being
of the community.
Professional Formation: The professional psychologist
of Universidad del Norte can evolve in the companies, organizations,
foundations, projects and organizations, official and private,
as investigator, adviser, facilitator and manager of the processes
of human development in the following areas:
- Clinical and health psychology: Psychological attention,
consultant's office and direction to children, adolescents,
adults and seniors. Design, application and evaluation
of preventive programs, consultancy, teaching, formulation
and development of projects of investigation in the area
of Clinical Psychology and health.
- Organizational psychology: Design, application and
evaluation of personnel selection models and programs
of qualification and development in: leadership, total
quality processes, formation of equipment for continuous
improvement, motivation, and human communication, quality
of work life, growth and personal development in the organizations.
- Educative psychology: Consultancy in the formation
of projects of educative investigation, realization and
educative evaluation of programs and projects, promotion
of organizational development of educative institutions,
consultant's offices in the education learning processes,
consultancy, evaluation of learning problems, and design
of proposals of innovation in the scope of communications
and advertising.
- Psychology and society: Formulation and development
of projects of investigation in the area of Social Psychology,
design, application and evaluation of programs elaborated
with base in the study of necessities of groups and communities.
- Consumer Psychology: Formulation and development of
projects that study the implied psychological processes
in the consumption habits of people. To advise companies
in respect to how to position or offer its products in
the market, from the analysis of the purchase tendencies
of people.
